European Entry/Exit System – EES – for third-country nationals crossing the external Schengen borders operational from 12 October 2025

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is Europe’s new border management system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay, each time they cross the external borders of 29 European countries.

Starting from 12 October 2025, the 29 European countries using the EES will progressively roll out the system at their external borders. The EES will be fully By 10 April 2026.

The new procedure for travelers is illustrated in the following infographics:

The new system does not apply to third-country nationals holding a national long-stay visa or a residence permit issued by Schengen States, citizens of San Marino, the Principality of Andorra, the Principality of Monaco, and the Vatican City, as well as other third-country nationals for whom specific exemptions are provided.
