A two-day study and deep discussions between scholars of the three monotheistic religions about: the figure of Moses, the biblical patriarch who had a profound impact on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
At the convent of the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land at the shrine of Moses on Mount Nebo and in conjunction with the eighth centenary of the Franciscans arrival in the Holy Land, eleven speakers from six countries have analyzed thoroughly not only the texts and interpretations of Prophet Moses, but also the meaning and the significance of that figure for the readers of the Torah, the Gospel and the Koran.
Under the patronage of HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan and Ján Figel, Special Envoy for the Promotion of Freedom of Religion or Belief outside the European Union, a seminar was organized by the Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies (RIIFS) in Amman and the Foundation for the Religious Sciences “Giovanni XXIII” of Bologna, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in Amman and the contribution of the EU Delegation in Jordan.
“The figure of Moses continues to exert a decisive influence all over the world,” emphasized Prof. Alberto Melloni, who took care of the scientific organization of the seminar together with RIIFS, “and it was important not only to discuss the mosaic message in the light of the exegetical interpretation, but also to offer an opportunity for comparing and listening to the different traditions and perspectives that are reflected on the figure of Moses. “
At the end of the event a “Message from Mount Nebo” was launched, through which the participants to the seminary wished that the work on further opportunities for comparison and study among scholars and representatives of the three religions would proceed in the “spirit of Mount Nebo”.
